Section 1, Lesson 1 – What is Reputation Management

Lesson Overview

Reputation is an athlete’s most valuable asset. This lesson introduces the foundations of reputation management, explores the power of public perception, and teaches athletes how to identify risks, build a strong personal brand, and recover from setbacks. Athletes will learn how to strategically shape their public image, avoid common pitfalls, and manage the media to their advantage.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, athletes will be able to:
✅ Understand how media, social media, and public perception shape reputation.
✅ Identify common risks and high-risk scenarios.
✅ Create a strategy to build and protect a strong public image.
✅ Learn how to respond and recover after a reputational setback.

Section 1: Understanding Reputation & Public Perception

✔️ Perception = Power: How you’re seen affects opportunities, endorsements, and longevity.
✔️ Reality vs. Belief: What people believe about you often matters more than what’s actually true.
✔️ Consistency is Key: Trust is built when your actions, image, and values align.
✔️ Media & Social Media Influence: Your interviews, posts, and public appearances shape your brand.

🔹 Activity: Think of an athlete with a strong reputation. What choices helped them gain public trust?

Section 2: Reputation Risks & Red Flags

✔️ Social Media Missteps: Inappropriate or emotional posts, offensive language, or public arguments.
✔️ Poor Media Handling: Unprepared interviews, insensitive comments, or defensive reactions.
✔️ On-Field & Off-Field Behavior: Aggression, disrespect, or legal/personal controversies.
✔️ Brand & Sponsor Conflicts: Endorsements that don’t align with your values or image.
✔️ Lack of Preparation: No media training or crisis strategy in place.

🔹 Activity: Identify two potential risks in your own life. How could you prevent or manage them?

Section 3: Building & Maintaining a Strong Reputation

✔️ Define Your Brand: Identify core values and live by them.
✔️ Engage Wisely: Be intentional and professional online and in interviews.
✔️ Lead On & Off the Field: Show integrity, work ethic, and community involvement.
✔️ Build Media Relationships: Respectful and prepared interactions lead to better coverage.
✔️ Stay Ready: Reputation is built over time, but one moment can undo it all.

🔹 Exercise: Draft a personal reputation plan with 3 focus areas: values, media strategy, and brand presence.

Section 4: When Things Go Wrong – How to Recover

✔️ Take Responsibility: Acknowledge mistakes with honesty.
✔️ Respond Professionally: Apologize publicly with sincerity and clarity.
✔️ Take Positive Action: Show change through service, mentorship, or growth.
✔️ Rebuild Over Time: Consistency is key to earning back trust.
✔️ Get Support: Coaches, mentors, and PR experts can guide your recovery.

Final Takeaways & Next Steps

✔️ Final Activity: Conduct a self-audit of your public presence—what aligns with your brand? What doesn’t?
✔️ Key Takeaway: Reputation is earned every day—protect it like your career depends on it.

✅ Next Steps:

  • Review your last 5 social media posts for alignment with your values.
  • Set personal guidelines for media and online interactions.
